Free family fun and learning at 2013 Breakfast on the Farm events

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Breakfast on the Farm is the chance for local residents to get up close and personal with their neighborhood farms to learn about where their food comes from. For consumers, it’s a day where they can get a firsthand look at the farms that are producing the wholesome food they love to eat.
It’s a unique experience that has something to offer for all. Farmers get to connect with local consumers, and families get to enjoy a free breakfast and learn together about how their food starts on the farm and ends up on the table.
Farms start preparing for their events as early as December. Once they have been chosen to host, the real work begins. Michigan State University (MSU) Extension staff members and the local volunteer planning committees meet regularly with the host farms to work on the details for each breakfast.
"We are looking forward to the five Breakfast on the Farm events in 2013. We have another great group of host farm families to work with, and each farm has put together an outstanding local planning committee,” said Nancy Thelen, MSU Extension educator. "In addition to the local planning committees, there will be an average of 200 volunteers who will help with various responsibilities on the day of the event."
In 2012, more than 18,000 visitors participated in the Breakfast on the Farm programs. Visitors often traveled from several counties away to learn more about modern agriculture and food production.
The event is completely free and includes breakfast and various educational stations and tours as well as kid-friendly activities. Free tickets are required for the breakfast and will be available beginning one month in advance of each program at locations throughout several surrounding counties. Ticket locations will be posted on the website below. Each program runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with breakfast served until noon.
The dates and Breakfast on the Farm host farms for 2013 are:
· June 15, Reid Dairy Farm, LLC, Jeddo (St. Clair County).
· July 13, Walt Dairy Farm, Coopersville (Ottawa County).
· Aug. 17, Humm Farm, LLC, Breckenridge (Gratiot County).
· Sept. 7, Black Locust Farms, LLC, Stanton (Montcalm County).
· Sept. 21, Ferry Farms, LLC, Litchfield (Hillsdale County).
